I was 7 the first time I saw my father cry. He was on the sofa, with his back turned, not noticing me peeking from the corner. We had returned from the hospital and his suspicions were confirmed. The thirst, the frequent urination, and the weight loss. I had juvenile diabetes, named for the young children it affected.

Now it’s known as Type I diabetes and I’ve lived with this disease for most of my life. I’ve gone through many trials and tribulations managing this disease, while fearful of getting complications. All of this has motivated me to seek natural remedies such as vitamins and herbs. While I have nothing against modern medicine and wear an insulin pump, I prefer natural remedies because most medications, including over-the-counter, give me side effects. Although I believe in natural remedies, it’s important to note that just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. Contrary to popular belief, natural remedies can cause side effects and even interact with other medications and supplements. Also, the FDA does not monitor many natural supplements because they’re classified as food products, not medicine.

I created this blog because I believe I can help my fellow diabetics. This site is dedicated to helping diabetics get back to nature by presenting information and research on natural remedies. I believe in integrative medicine and have used both Eastern and Western medicine to manage my diabetes. There are many natural remedies that I believe have not only helped me manage my diabetes but have also kept me from developing complications. I also do a ton of research. I want to know EVERYTHING about diabetes. I will share my personal experiences and the information I’ve learned with you. Remedies I wish I had known when I was younger. Information I wish my parents had known because if you’re a parent, you know you suffer more than your kids when they’re ill. My father was a stoic military man. A seven-year-old with diabetes broke him.

I ask you to please keep an open mind; be a diabetic detective and do your research; work with your healthcare team, and see what works best for you.

I have to add a disclaimer that I am NOT giving out medical advice. Always check with your doctor when trying new treatments and monitor your blood sugar levels.

This is my journey with diabetes and these are the remedies that have helped me manage it. I hope they can help you too. Together, we can get back to nature with diabetes.

Take care,

Gaby
